Rough budget estimate
A rough budget estimate is a preliminary cost range that shows the scale of the expenditure involved.
A rough budget estimate is prepared at the very beginning, when the investor knows there is a problem in production but does not yet have an idea of how to solve it. At this point, no specific solution is priced, because there isn’t one yet. Instead, a range of amounts is given, such as “PLN 2 to 5 million”, based on experience from similar projects.
Such an estimate is very imprecise, and that is fine. Its purpose is not to calculate costs exactly, but to answer the question: is it worth pursuing this topic at all? If the range far exceeds the company’s means or the expected benefits, the investor knows this straight away, before spending money on design.
Example: A wet pet food manufacturer notices that its sauce preparation line cannot keep up with the pouch filling machine, which stands idle every few hours. The investor does not yet know whether expanding the existing line will be enough or whether a new one has to be built. They receive a rough budget estimate: solving the problem will cost anywhere from several hundred thousand to several million zlotys, depending on the chosen approach. This is enough for the management board to decide that it is worth moving on to the next stage.
